Winter arrives

Saturday November 13, 1976

Dear Robin

It's wet, cold and miserable and it looks like it is going to stay that way. I had to bring all my plants in yesterday and then it didn't freeze. I'm glad it didn't and I hope it doesn't tonight because my marigolds are so pretty. My zinnias are almost through blooming but there are a few left. Needless to say I've been chasing cats since I brought the plants in. I guess I need the exercise.

Donna was in Tuesday and came by for a little while. I wanted to go down there Thursday and Friday but this bad weather came so I decided not to go.

I went with Lisa to Plate and Platter the other day and they had some custard cups like I've been looking for. They were too high priced but I bought two and then she bought two for me.

If you do get the apartment I'm sure we can find a lot of things around here for you to use if you are not too particular about matching sets and things like that.

The other day Grant was playing in the back yard and then he came in the front door. Lisa knew he couldn't open their side gate and she had been telling him he must not climb over so she asked him if he climbed over and he said - No, I didn't climb over. I was just standing there and a big wind came along and just blew me right over.

Love

Mother

Each paragraph of this letter reveals one or more of my mother's priorities for life:

flowers,

family,

cooking,

being frugal! I just wonder what those custard cups cost. How much could even a fancy kitchen store like Plate and Platter charge for little bitty custard cups? They looked very similar to these.

When was the last time you made custard? I can remember making custard maybe twice in my adult life, unless you count the custard you have to make to go in lemon meringue or chocolate pie. But just plain custard in a cup? Hasn't happened much. Maybe I should try again. Or, I could make flan, or creme brulee, both of which are custards that went to private school and whose parents bought them a red BMW for their 16th birthdays.

my favorite part is this, "she asked him if he climbed over and he said - No, I didn't climb over. I was just standing there and a big wind came along and just blew me right over."
I don't even know who the child was but I had a picture in my mind of him and the gate! Our homemade ice-cream base is custard. I have made it but it is usually Mark who makes it. Mark's momma used to make custard (in the cup like you are describing) for people when they had surgery and were just home from the hospital.

My homemade ice cream base is custard, too, now that you mention it. Actually, since I posted this I thought of several other "custards" I make - even quiche is a sort of custard, although it bakes instead of cooks on the stove. And I make quiche a lot. Especially since we moved to the country and have church members who give us eggs from their chickens.
